RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COLLECTON
Next weekend, the special Religious Retirement Fund collection will take place. Elderly members of the religious outnumber those who earn salaries in the work-place, and they are financially unable to care for the elderly. Please help those who have worked in our parish: the Fran-ciscan Sisters of Allegany, the Franciscan Sister of St. Joseph, the Jesuit Fathers, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Columban Fathers, the Consolata Fathers, the Grey Nuns, the Stella Niagara Franciscans and the Sisters of St. Joseph.
CARE FOR CREATION
“The human family is charged with preserving the beauty, diversity and integrity of nature, as well as with fostering its productivity. Yet God alone is sovereign over the whole earth.” - USCCB, Renewing the Earth
FRIENDLY PHONES
The Telephone Assurance Program (TAP) is a free volunteer service that provides regular telephone calls to homebound elderly and disabled persons to check on their well- being and to give people an opportunity to socialize. Relationships grow and last for years through a regular weekly, monthly or daily 5-15 minute phone call.
These calls are especially needed during the upcoming holiday season to help alleviate some of the concerns facing those who live alone, and to help allow them to remain independent. If you know of someone who would like to receive calls or would like to make phone calls in Erie County, please call Ladies of Charity at 895-4001 .
IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU,
SNEEZING AND COUGHING…
If You Are Sick, it would be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your germs.
And Remember: If you have difficulty getting around in good weather, please stay home when it is icy or snowy. God understands.
ATTENTION SNOWBIRDS! Before leaving for your warmer winter environment, please make a pledge now to Appeal 2010 for Catholic Charities. It will relieve your mind and help your parish reach its goal by the closing Sunday. Call Catholic Charities‟ Appeal Dept. at 856-4494 to make your pledge today or donate securely online at www.ccwny.org. Thank you.
ELECTRONIC GIVING – Secure and Easy.

“CHILDREN, AND THOSE WHO ARE DEPENDENT on us due to disability or age, offer us the opportunity to grow in patience, kindness, and love. They teach us that life is a shared gift, not an encumbrance. At the end of life, we will be judged on love alone.”
Cardinal Justin Rigali,
Statement for Respect Life Sunday

CARE FOR CREATION
“Obedience to the voice of the earth is more important for our future happiness than the voices of the moment, the desires of the moment. ...Existence itself, our earth, speaks to us, and we have to learn to listen.” ( Pope Benedict XVI, July 2007). Take a moment to enjoy the silence of the falling snow. What is God asking you to do in order to learn to listen more attentively to Him as He speaks in creation.
FRIENDLY PHONES: The Telephone Assurance Program (TAP) is a free volunteer service that provides regular telephone calls to homebound elderly and disabled persons to check on their well- being and to give people an opportu-nity to socialize.
TOO MANY CALENDARS?

TO ALL OUR FAMILIES !!!
“THANK YOU” TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED OUR PARISH WITH THEIR TIME AND TALENTS
This is the time of year to remember all of those who have helped during the year to make our Parish the community that it is. Many sincere thanks to:
âThe priests and religious who have served us through-out the year, especially during Msgr. Joe’s absence.
âThe wonderful music that our Music Director Adria Ryan has prepared for us throughout the year to make our celebrations more joyful. Thanks to the special Children’s Choir and the Adult Choir whose number continue to grow along with their talent. We enjoy their gift of music which has greatly enhanced the Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass, especially during this holiday season.
âOur Christmas Decorating Committee, headed by Tom Wiktorski and Melissa Eyeington. We appreciate the time you gave to decorate the inside and outside of the Church. As always, it has added to our enjoyment of the Christmas Season. We thank you for your commitment every year, and encourage others to help next year!
âThe Flower Committee headed by Eileen and Mike Summers. Thank you for decorating the Altar for Easter and Christmas and on special occasions throughout the year. It is truly a labor of love.
âPat Wiedenbeck, who decorated the Rectory Office door with seasonal wreaths. Each wreath is a work of art and enjoyed by everyone who enters the office.
âDan Staszak, our Maintenance Supervisor, a very special thanks!!! Dan’s pride in his work is obvious. During the summer, the Church lawns, gardens and bushes are meticulously kept. In the winter, Dan works endlessly to keep the Church and School entrances clear of snow. His hard work is not unappreciated. Thanks also to Ugo Del Sorbo, who works with Dan to keep the Churches clean.
âAll those whose quiet reliability helps our parish to function smoothly, not only during the Christmas holidays, but year-round: the Lectors, Eucharistic Minis-ters, Altar Servers, Ushers, Greeters, Counters, Adult Altar Servers, Parish Council Members and committee members, our Pastoral Associate Renée Villa, our Sacristans Lynne Griebner and Joe Wingerter, our CTK School Principal JoAnn Mikulec and the teachers, our Religious Education Director Peggy Page and the volunteer teachers, our Youth Ministers Maryann Peer and Debbi Testa and also David Hayes. Without their dedication to these ministries, the everyday operations at the parish would be more difficult.
We wish all of our families a
blessed Christmas and a joyous New Year!
Thank you, and may God bless you and keep you,
And may the joy of the Christmas season
Remain with you always.
Fr. John and Msgr. Joe

CARE FOR CREATION
Pope John Paul II challenged us: “We face a fundamental question which can be described as both ethical and ecological. How can accelerated development be prevented from turning against man? How can one prevent disasters that destroy the environment and threaten all forms of life, and how can the negative consequences that have already occurred be remedied?”

THE ANSWER IS ELEMENTARY: Catholic Alumni Partnership
The Catholic Alumni Partnership (CAP) is a new, privately funded project, aimed at helping Catholic elementary schools reconnect with their alumni. It’s purpose is to help develop a strong, sustainable annual fundraising program for each of the Catholic elementary schools participating in CAP, with alumni support as its foundation.
CAP is currently a collaboration between 303 Catholic elementary schools from seven Arch/dioceses. These Arch/dioceses in addition to the Diocese of Buffalo include the Diocese of Bridgeport, the Diocese of Brooklyn, the Archdiocese of Hartford, the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Norwich and the Diocese of Rockville Center. Currently, there are 53 Catholic Schools participating from the Diocese of Buffalo.
The benefits of Catholic schools are undeniable:
ØStudents consistently display higher test scores than their public school counterparts;
ØCatholic schools have lower dropout rates (3.4%) than both public (14.4%) and other private schools (11.9%);
ØStudies report that Catholic school students performed better than other students in 3 basic objectives
of civil education – the capacity for civic engagement, political knowledge, & political tolerance;
In spite of this strong history of academic excellence, Catholic schools today are faced with tremendous challenges. Despite waiting lists in nearly 30% of schools, many Catholic schools closed last year due to financially strapped budgets. Today, tuition in schools covers only 54% of student costs. The balance is funded by a combination of a parish subsidy and school fundraising by parents.
As families are „priced out‟ of Catholic elementary education, enrollment suffers. The increase in tuition costs needed to offset enrollment declines has set off a downward spiral: tuition affects enrollment; enrollment affects tuition. Catholic elementary school staff – once comprised of religious men and women – is now predominantly made up of lay-men and women, which results in ever-growing budgets for schools. The declining ability of families to pay for Catholic education, coupled with financially strapped budgets, leads to the need for philanthropy in supporting Catholic elementary schools.
You are urged to respond to a letter you may have received in the mail, or go to www.clickYES.com. Your support of our Catholic School is needed. You can go to www.myCTKschool.com to learn about Christ the King School.

TOO MANY CALENDARS?
This is the time of year when many of us end up with various calendars for the New Year that we know we will never use or need. Did you know that many of the patrons of the St. Vincent de Paul Dining room never own a calen-dar? They would appreciate any extra calendars you may receive over the next few weeks. Please drop them off at the Rectory.
IT’S AMAZING THE EFFECTS THAT COOKES HAVE!
Imagine a man who’s been locked up for 15-20 years and stands up to say,
“Nobody’s ever been this good to me in my whole life!” Being incarcer-ated, some
of these men haven’t even seen the likes of Oreo’s, Windmill Cookies, Fig
Newtons, etc., since they were kids. It brings them back to their childhood and
helps them to come to Christ “as a little child”. Kairos is an
international Prison Ministry that runs “Mission-Like” retreats at correctional
facilities in our area. On December 10-13, there was a 3-day Kairos retreat
at Wende Correctional Facility in Alden. Thank you to our parishion-ers who
supported this ministry through the donation of prepackaged cookies and prayer.

ONE GIFT REMAINS UNOPENED UNDER THE TREE: “THE GIFT OF GRIEF”
Grief becomes a gift when its power is used to transform our lives. Grief is our common ground. Heal-ing can begin to take place when you are able to journey through suffering on a path to a wholeness.
Please join us for a DVD presentation of “The Gift of Grief” with discussion on Thursday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Library, OR Saturday, January 23 at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel Meeting Room. Please call Renée at 839-1430, ext. 221 or e-mail rvilla@ctksnyder.com to register.
Dear Parishioners of Christ the King,
Thank you for taking the time to fill out the “Parish-Planning Survey”. Your comments and input are valuable to the future of our parish. The results are being tabulated and will be made available to every home via the parish newsletter in February, 2010. Updates will also be printed in the bulletin throughout the coming year. I am looking forward to working with you as we endeavor to meet the changing needs of our parish community.
As we begin the New Year, let us remember to pray for each other at every Eucharistic celebration.
Fr. John

YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE SMILE ON THEIR FACES
The Erie County Home and the Social Justice Committee wish to extend their thanks to everyone who contributed to the Giving Tree this year. Once again, it was a complete success. We welcomed several new elves to help in the distribution this year, and as always, it was rewarding being the gift-givers to these patients. Hope your Christmas was wonderful and may the Christ Child be ever present in your New Year.
CATHOLIC CHARITIES wishes you a blessed and Happy New Year! Resolve to make a difference in 2010 - for Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me.” We help tens of thousands of your broth-ers and sisters each year. A gift to the annual Appeal enables us to do that . For more about our work and the many ways your gifts strengthen our community, call Catholic Charities at 856-4494 or go to www.ccwny.org.
Every little boy and girl is a unique and
irreplaceable creature designed by God of love, His
personal gift that comes to us bearing his image and
likeness. While biological parents assist in God’s
creative act, God contributes the child’s eternal
soul - his or her intellect, consciousness, will and
the capacities to reason and love, to hope and aspire.
