FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA)
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT (RHAPP)
The FOCA and RHAPP are two extreme legislative proposals, which would wipeout
virtually every Pro-Life legislation passed in the last 36 years. FOCA is a
Federal legislation, and RHAPP is a New York State legislation. Both are
dangerous and, if passed as written, would allow the following:
1. Invalidate the ban on partial-birth
abortion and all late-term abortions.
2. Force Catholic hospitals and Catholic physicians, nurses and staff to provide
abortions, as they would be made a "fundamental right".
3. Eliminate or prohibit any parental notification for girls as young as 12 who
seek an abortion.
4. Allow abortions to be performed by non-physicians and eliminate informed
consent, waiting periods and any regulations in place to protect women from
unsafe abortion clinics.
Please contact Gov. Paterson to oppose
RHAPP at (518) 474-8390;
Please contact your two Senators (Schumer & Gillibrand) to oppose FOCA (S.1173)
at (202)224-3121; and Congressman Chris Lee to oppose FOCA (H.R.1964) at
(202)224-3121.
For more info on FOCA, please see http://www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/FOCA
For more info on RHAPP please see www.nyscatholic.org

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
“As people of religious faith, we bishops believe that the atmosphere that
supports life on earth is a God-given gift, one we must respect and protect. It
unites us as one human family. Of we harm the atmosphere, we dishonor our
Creator and the gift of creation.” – US Catholic Bishops, “Global Climate
Change”, June, 2001
Environmental Tip:
Consider making a meatless Friday a permanent part of your diet. We all know
that fasting is good for your physical and spiritual health. Livestock accounts
for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The release of antibiotics,
growth hormones and other materials from factory farms also places an enormous
burden on water and soil quality.
END OF YEAR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS are
available by sending a note to Rectory Office (you can place it in the
collection basket), or call us at 839-1430.
FOCA/RHAPP POSTCARD CAMPAIGN
Currently there are two legislative imminent threats to unborn life that need
your attention. One is on the Federal Level and one on the State Level.
FOCA (Freedom of Choice Act) is pending abortion legislation in Congress at the federal level. It represents the most radical threat to unborn children ever in the history of the U.S. For more information on the bill, please see www.nchla.org and www.fightfoca.com .
On the weekend of February 28 & March 1, a
postcard campaign will be conducted in
each parish in the Diocese of Buffalo to oppose this extreme abortion bill.
RHAPP (Reproductive Health & Privacy Protection Act) is a bill at the state level. It is an imminent threat to unborn life here in New York State. See www.nyscatholic.org to take action now! For more information see www.buffalodiocese.org/prolife/index.htm

CATHOLIC CHARITIES
In order to provide hope, we must have charity – or love. This Valentine’s Day,
please open your heart to the senior who struggles to find affordable, livable
housing or simply needs a bit of social support or a hot meal to stay in their
own home; the family who depends on a bag of groceries each month from a pantry
to keep food on the table; or the teen who needs help with his or her education.
Whoever. Wherever. Whenever. Catholic Charities is always there. Please be there
too. Give selflessly to Appeal 2009. Find out more at www.ccwny.org or call
856-4494.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

of history and Lord of human hearts, be with us! Jesus Christ, eternal Son of
God, be with us!” – taken from Pope John Paul II Fear Not – Thoughts on Living
in Today’s World
There is always a need for Adorers!
We are currently looking for people to sign-up to adore weekly at:
Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
Thursday at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Dear Friends at Christ the King Church,
On behalf of the residents and staff at the Erie County Home, I would like to
thank you and your group for making our Christmas so very special. As you can
see from the pictures you brought great joy to our residents. Your gifts were
wonderful. Our staff and residents were amazed at your generosity. One resident
would not let us take the box that her gift came in because she wanted to show
people that she had something "new." In all her life, she had never owned
anything brand new. What made the gifts even more special were the smiling and
kindhearted individuals who delivered them! We truly appreciate your generosity
and would like to applaud Christ the King parish for spreading True Christmas
Cheer! God Bless!

From now until Palm Sunday, two of the fourteen Stations will be represented along with a brief explanation of each Station.
THE FIRST STATION – JESUS
PRAYS IN THE GARDEN
“Obedience cost you your life, for me it is an act of the will. Help me to
bend.”
THE SECOND STATION – JESUS
TAKES HIS CROSS
“Remind me often that in carrying my cross, I carry yours with you.”
LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to
abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of
Lent and Good Friday.
Fasting: All Catholics between their 18th and 59th birthdays are also bound to
observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food
between meals. Light sustenance may be taken on two other occasions in the
course of the day.
Easter Duty: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all
the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a
year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good
reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year. This obligation may be
fulfilled between Feb. 10th (First Sunday in Lent) and May 18 (Trinity Sunday).
The Following Should Also be
Noted:
1) RECONCILIATION: Catholics are bound by an obligation faithfully to confess
serious sins at least once a year (Canon 989)
2) OTHER FRIDAYS OF THE YEAR: Catholics should be reminded that all other
Fridays of the year remain as days of penance, in prayerful remembrance of the
Passion of Jesus Christ.
3) OBLIGATION: The obligation, which we have as members of the Church, to do
penance is a serious one. Furthermore, the obligation to observe, as a whole or
“substantially”, the penitential days specified by the Church is a serious one.
4) While no one should hold himself or herself lightly excused, one should not
become unduly scrupulous. Failure to observe individual days of penance is less
serious than the failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial
number of such days.

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
“We also hope that the United States will continue to undertake reasonable and
effective initiatives for energy conservation and the development of alternate
renewable and clean-energy resources. New technologies and innovations can help
meet this challenge … More needs to be done to reduce air pollution, through the
use of improved technologies and environmental entrepreneurship …” – US Catholic
Bishops, “Global climate Change”, June 2001.
Environmental Tip:
Support for a clean energy policy based on wind, solar, geothermal, water and
hydrogen power is an essential starting point to curb global climate change. Our
Church leaders have consistently urged industrialized societies to develop new
energy technologies for the benefit of the world, as a matter of Christian love
of neighbor. These new technologies will benefit us through the growth of green
jobs in the U.S. As we learn to supply our own energy, we will also avoid the
temptation to become involved in wars and international pressure to control
outside oil and energy supplies.
END OF YEAR FINANCIAL STATEMENTS are available by sending a note to Rectory Office (you can place it in the collection basket), or call us at 839-1430.

WINTER IS A DIFFICULT TIME OF YEAR TO GET AROUND IN – Snow, ice, slippery sidewalks and messy roads, make any traveling difficult this time of year. If you have difficulty getting around in good weather, it is common sense to stay home if it is icy or too snowy. You can watch the Mass on television (see below), or call the Rectory to have someone bring you weekly communion during the winter months. You don’t want to take a chance on falling and hurting yourself. God understands. ALSO: In this season of colds and flu, sneezing and coughing … If you are sick, it would be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the Sign of Peace until you are well.
