John Bartunek, LC, “Why You Matter,”  Respect Life Program (2009-2010)

CARE FOR CREATION

Consider the importance of committing to one ac-tion in order to care for “the great gift of God’s Creation”.  Water is an especially precious gift.  Consider some of the following: Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month.  Turn off the water while you shave and save up to 300 gallons a month.  Since most bottled water is tap water, invest in a water bottle and use the water from your own tap.

Be joyful always;

Pray continually;

Give thanks in all circumstances,

For this is God’s will for you

In Christ Jesus.

 ROE v. WADE

      On January 22, 1973 the United States Supreme

Court handed down a decision which, in conjunction

with the accompanying decision (Doe vs. Bolton)

allowed for the destruction of human life from

conception through the partial delivery of a fully devel-oped child for any reason or no reason.  The result was the death of over 1.2 million unborn children each year and, what Pope John Paul II termed a "Culture of Death".  As this grim anniversary draws near we ask that you take some time to

*Pray-for the unborn, their mothers and fathers and all  who work in the abortion industry that they may  come to see the value and dignity of every child;

 *Educate yourself-about abortion, embryonic stem-cell

 research and cloning so you can be informed and

 knowledgeable;

*Speak out-against abortion and for life.  Abortion not only

  ends the life of a child, but Abortion also hurts

 women.  To be pro-woman is to be pro-life!

ROE v. WADE OBSERVANCE MASS

Saturday, January 23, at 4:00 PM Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, Celebrant and Homilist

LIGHT A CANDLE FOR LIFE ON JANUARY 22       Everyone is encouraged to place a candle in the front window of their homes at sundown on Friday, January 22. The candle serves as a reminder of the millions unborn and almost born babies who have been aborted since the hei-nous Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade in 1973.

It is better to light just one little candle Than to stumble in the dark. Better by far that you light just one little candle, All you need is a tiny spark If we'd all say a prayer that the world would be free, A wonderful dawn of a new day we'd see... And if everyone lit just one little candle, What a bright world this would be.

 CARE FOR CREATION

    Is it more environmentally friendly to hand-wash dishes or to use a dishwasher?

          Dishwashers are the way to go if you comply with two simple criteria:

1) Run a dishwasher only when its full, and dont  rinse your dishes before putting them in the dish-washer.

 2)  Dont use the dry cycle.  The water used in-most dishwasher is hot enough to evaporate quickly if the door is left open after the wash and rinse cycles are complete.

       The bondage of a stressful schedule and the   time-devouring demands of multi-tasking can “blind” you to the needs of your loved ones.  Jesus tells us in the gospel: “Today the scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”  Perhaps you are the “the captive who needs to be set free.”  Come Lord Jesus, set us free!

CARE FOR CREATION

Energy Saving Tip: Heat Only the Space You Need.

Close off rarely used rooms to save      energy and money. One way to save money on your heating bill and reduce the amount of energy youre    using is to stop heating rooms you rarely use.

     Your furnace works hard to keep every room in your house warm and cozy all winter, but if youre paying to heat rooms you dont spend much time in, then youre wasting both energy and money. According to the U.S.   Department of Energy, lowering your thermostat one     degree can reduce your heating bill by 1 percent.

     Make sure the room with your thermostat is getting plenty of heat, but close heat vents and doors in rarely used rooms to reduce your energy consumption and lower your heating bills. Once youve taken this simple step, you may notice that your house has fewer drafts and warms up faster.

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY JANUARY 24, 2010

ROE v. WADE

      On January 22, 1973 the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision which, in conjunction with the accompanying decision (Doe vs. Bolton) allowed for the     destruction of human life from conception through the partial delivery of a fully         developed child for any reason or no         reason.  The   result was the death of over  1.2 million unborn children each year and, what Pope John Paul II termed a "Culture of Death".  As this grim anniversary is               commemorated, we ask that you take some time to:

*Pray-for the unborn, their mothers and    fathers and all who work in the abortion    industry that they may come to see the value and dignity of every child;

 *Educate yourself-about abortion,          embryonic stem-cell research and cloning so you can be informed and knowledgeable;

*Speak out-against abortion and for life.  Abortion not only ends the life of a child, but Abortion also hurts women. To be pro-woman is to be pro-life!

 ATTENTION: CAREGIVERS AND FRIENDS OF CAREGIVERS

       Do you have a relative, neighbor or friend within the parish community who is no longer able to attend Mass but would benefit from Holy Communion?  Are they homebound?  In Nursing Home care?  Please check with them and then complete the following form and drop it into the collection basket.  We will then make arrangements for a pastoral visit.  Thank you and God bless you.

URGENT MESSAGE FROM  THE US CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS

Stop Abortion Funding in Health Care Reform!

Protect Conscience

Ensure Affordable Health Coverage

Allow Immigrants to Purchase Private Health Insurance

     As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic bishops continue to make the moral case that    genuine health care reform must protect the life, dignity,  consciences and health of all, especially the poor and vulner-able. Health care reform should not advance a pro-abortion agenda in our country.

• On November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform that reaffirms the essential,         longstanding and widely supported policy against using   federal funds for elective abortions and includes positive measures on affordability and immigrants.

• On December 24, the U.S. Senate rejected this policy and passed health care reform that requires federal funds to help subsidize and promote health plans that cover elective    abortions. All purchasers of such plans will be required to pay for other people’s abortions through a separate payment solely to pay for abortion.

Outside the abortion context, neither bill has adequate      conscience protection for health care providers, plans or   employer.

     These two bills must now be combined into one bill that both the House and Senate will vote on in final form.         Provisions against abortion funding and in favor of            conscience protection, affordability, and immigrants’ access to health care must be part of a fair and just health care     reform bill, or the final bill must be opposed.

ACTION: Contact your Representative and Senators today by     e-mail, phone or FAX.

To send a pre-written, instant e-mail to Congress go to www.usccb.org/action.  Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at:   202-224-3121, or call your Members’ local offices. Contact info can be found on Members’ web sites at www.house.gov and   www.senate.gov.

MESSAGE—HOUSE:

“I am pleased that the House health care bill maintains the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion. I urge you to work to uphold essential provisions against   abortion funding, to include full conscience protection and to assure that health care is accessible and affordable for all. Until and unless these criteria are met, I urge you to oppose the final bill.”

MESSAGE—SENATE:

“I am deeply disappointed that the Senate health care bill fails to maintain the longstanding policy against federal funding of abortion and does not include adequate protection for conscience. I urge you to support essential provisions against abortion funding, similar to those in the House bill. Include full conscience protection and assure that health care is accessible and affordable for all. Until and unless these  criteria are met, I urge you to oppose the final bill.”

WHEN: Votes in the House and Senate on the final bill are expected in January.  Act today! Thank You!

 CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2010

     Patron Saint of this year’s appeal is St. Damien of Molokai.  He was a man who gave relentlessly of himself to serve others, even at the cost of his own life.  Born Joseph de Veuster in 1840 in Belgium, his patronage included spending 16 years caring for the physical, medical, and spiritual needs of people with leprosy who had been exiled to the barren island of Molokai, Hawaii under a govern-ment-sanctioned medical quarantine.  Through the services of  Catholic Charities, you can help your neighbor in need, those who may be disadvantaged,  or those who may  struggle with mental illness.

     Whoever. Wherever. Whenever. Catholic Charities is always there. Please be there too.  Give selflessly to the 2010 Appeal.  Find out more at www.ccwny.org or call 218-1400.

CARE FOR CREATION

Energy Saving Tip: Use a Hot Water Bottle    to Reduce Your Personal Chill Factor.

     Hot water bottles make warm companions on cold nights. Looking for a foolproof way to stay warm on a cold night? Use a hot water bottle.

     Hot water bottles are inexpensive and elegantly efficient for knocking the chill off cold sheets before you slide into bed, or warming your cold feet once youre under the covers.

     Hot water bottles also come in handy as foot and hand warmers when you come in from the cold outdoors. And if youre reading, watching television, or engaged in some other quiet activity on a cold night, a hot water bottle and a warm throw can create a cozy cocoon.

     When the water turns cold, put the bottle aside and use the water for your plants.

Brother Timothy, St. Patrick’s Friary

     “You have been most generous each year to help our ministry keep functioning.  This year the numbers services has increased, but the Good Lord took care of us, with large food donations.  Your generous check will purchase extra food and other necessary expenses for the pantry.  God Bless you all, peace, joy and hope in 2010”

                St. Patrick’s Pantry

     “Thank you for all your generous donations, your com-mitted support and kindness to us.  If it weren’t for your donations, many of our families would have nothing for their children on Christmas.  Thank you for your faithful-ness, generosity and dedications to the least among us.”

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS

     Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.  Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.  And bless us with peace.  We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen
