Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

CTK YOUTH GROUP AND FRIENDS SUPPORT RESPONSE TO LOVE CENTER

CTK Youth Council hosted its annual Fall Coffeehouse for Charity on October 14th, to benefit the Response to Love Center located on Buffalo's east side. This Center provides assistance to those in need including a food pantry, community dining room, thrift shop, personal care program, infant formula program, as well as additional services such as GED, computer training, and health & wellness programs. A total of $320 was collected for donation.

Thank you to our opening band, Subject To Change from Amherst High School whose musical talent and enthusiasm about volunteering to play for charity was a great beginning for our night. We appreciate all the extra rehearsals involved and we are honored to provide the venue for their debut. They did a fantastic job! Thanks to Youth Council member, Tim Henderson, a very gifted musician from St. Joe's whose performance on guitar, banjo, and ukulele, included a variety of songs including his own compositions. This was his second performance for charity at CTK and we are grateful to him for sharing his talent.

The night also included open mic time, when the stage was open to music and song from members of the audience. Thanks to everyone who performed. We were amazed at the level of talent, the originality, and the support of the crowd for all the performers.

Many thanks to everyone for getting into the spirit of our Halloween theme, and to Mrs. Yees and Mrs. Clayback's Confirmation class who provided re-freshments and helped during the event. And finally, a special thanks to everyone who worked in talent, scouting, publicity, stage crew, decorating and hosting.

IN THIS SEASON OF COLDS AND FLU, SNEEZING AND COUGHING…

As you are now aware, last week, Bishop Edward Kmiec, issued a directive to all parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo to immediately suspend the distribu-tion of Holy Communion through the cup. The Bishop also asked Church goers that instead of shaking hands during the Sign of Peace at Mass, they offer a nod or a verbal greeting of peace.

As we have requested in the past, Bishop Kmiec also stated that if people are sick, they should stay home, so as not to spread the sickness. You will be excused from your Sunday Mass obligation. 5

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec’s

Pastoral Letter on Catholic Schools

“Visioning for the Future” 5

November 2009

My Dear Friends,

These are exciting times for our Catholic schools! There is a renewed sense of commitment and enthusiasm on the part of everyone who is engaged in what I consider a mission vital to the future of the Catholic Church: strong Catholic schools.

Generations of young people have been educated in our Catholic schools, dating back to the 1800’s. That tradition of academic excellence continues to this day. Our students move on to become leaders in our communities, passing on the Catholic values they learned to their children. It is a beautiful continuum of our Church, as Catholic schools instill our core beliefs and commitment to Gospel values in our students.

We have a vision for thriving Catholic elementary schools in the eight counties of Western New York. This encompasses a number of areas, including Catholic identity, academic excellence, enrollment, leadership and financial viability.

Catholic values permeate the curriculum and educational programming with prayer, worship and liturgical experiences enhancing the faith life of our students, families, faculty and staff. Our Catholic schools must have an authentic Christ-centered mission which fosters personal pride in, and commitment to, the Catholic faith.

While we focus on our Catholic identity, our schools have a longstanding tradition of welcoming families from diverse backgrounds in terms of religion, race, ethnicity, economic status and ability. School enrollment reflects the diversity of the parishes and local community being served.

Along with the leadership of the Division of Catholic Education, I recognize and support our Catholic schools as a ministry vital to the future of the Church. It is essential that our pastors, principals and other administrators actively promote collaboration and growth of the staff. Parents need to be committed to their parish and school, sharing their gifts and talents to further the Church’s mission.

Families recognize that Catholic schools are equal to, or better than, other educational options. Catholic schools excel academically, meeting or exceeding national, state and diocesan curriculum standards. Each graduate leaves school prepared by our teachers to succeed at the high school level.

It is essential that our schools have sufficient revenue to fund a quality program, invest in technology and provide a well-rounded education. I am very grateful to all our parishes which make a substantial and long-term commitment to funding Catholic schools. Even parishes where there are no schools recognize the importance of sustaining our Catholic schools.

While much has changed in our nation, Catholic schools remain a constant, an invaluable tool for educating generations of children who will continue to be a source of leadership in our Church and in our communities.

Together, let us continue to work to ensure that our Catholic schools grow and prosper while remaining available, accessible and affordable.

Fraternally in Christ,

Most Rev. Edward U. Kmiec

Bishop of Buffalo

KAIROS PRISON MNISTRY

"Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.”

( Robert Kennedy ).

Kairos is an international Prison Ministry that runs "Mission-Like" retreats at correctional facilities in our area. On December 10-13 there will be a three-day Kairos  retreat at Wende Correctional Facility in Alden.  Our parishioners are being asked to support this ministry through prayer.

Next weekend, November 21 & 22, parishioners are asked to bring a donation of pre-packaged store bought cookies that can be used during the retreat weekend. The store bought cookies will be collected in the back of the   Upper Church. For more information please contact Terry Johnson @ 931-5911 or tjohnson@niag.com

         CARE FOR GOD’S CREATION

A statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops informs us of their intent “to offer a       distinctively religious and moral perspective to what is   necessarily a complicated scientific, economic, and political discussion.”  Their letter on Global Climate Change in 2001, expressed our responsibility to help slow down the amount of CO² entering the atmosphere, the major human cause of climate change.

In December, U.S. representatives will go to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenha-gen.  A survey of 19 countries on International Policy      Attitudes finds that Americans rank dead last in backing action on climate change.  On a scale of 0: as no priority, to 10: as a very high priority, China was at 8.9, Russia at 7.4, and the U.S. at 4.7.  The United States has 3% of the worlds population but annually consumes more that 25% of the energy production of the Earth.  We CAN help by notifying our congressmen and women to tell them to support bills which will decrease the causes of Climate Change.  Thank you!

“STICKS AND STONES  MAY BREAK MY BONES,

But Words Will Never Hurt Me.”

This saying is from when we were young and we now know this is far from the truth - words -  can be the most hurtful, deep, and long lasting, encounters of our lives. As todays scripture reminds us, much in life will pass away and be forgotten - but words, will linger, hurt and fester, sometimes forever.  As parents, grandparents, godparents, guardians and caring adults, we try to notice our words choose them carefully and use them positively.  And when we slip up, because of fear, anger, anxiety, or even power, we know that we can always seek forgiveness by sincerely saying, I am sorry, will you forgive me, especially to our      children and those we love.

WATCHES FOR ST. VINCENT de PAUL

Last year our parish donated over 75 old and un-wanted watches, and because of this success they will again be collected. The watches can be repaired for a nominal fee and sold in the ST. Vincent de Paul  Thrift Shop.  A box has been placed next to the food basket in the Church  vestibule for your donations.

FRIENDLY PHONES

The Telephone Assurance Program (TAP) is a free volunteer service that provides regular telephone calls to homebound elderly and disabled persons to check on their well- being and to give people an opportunity to socialize. Relationships grow and last for years through a regular weekly, monthly or daily 5-15 minute phone call.

These calls are especially needed during the upcoming holiday season to help alleviate some of the concerns facing those who live alone, and to help allow them to remain independent. If you know of someone who would like to receive calls or would like to make phone calls in Erie County, please call Ladies of Charity at 895-4001 .
