EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
"The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night He went into His agony. But as often in the history of the church since that time, evil was awake, but the disciples were asleep. That is why there came out of His anguished and lonely Heart the sigh: 'Could you not watch one hour with me?' Not for an hour of activity did he plead, but for an hour of friendship." - Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, The Hour that Makes My Day
There is always a need for Adorers! We are currently looking for people to sign-up to adore weekly at:
¢ Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
"We in the developed world … are obligated to address our own wasteful and destructive use of resources as a matter of top priority." - Renewing the Earth, US Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1991

Environmental Tip:
Unplug electrical devices. Even turned off, hairdryers, cell phone charges, microwaves and televisions use energy. The energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working account for 5% of total domestic energy consumption and spew 18 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere annually.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS
Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.
And bless us with peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER SERVING OUR COUNTRY
IN THE MILITARY, AT HOME OR OVERSEAS?
We will be glad to add their name to the bulletin board in the Vestibule of the Upper Church, which has been dedicated to honor those who are in all arms of the military. This display gives a visual reminder of the brave, dedicated men and women serving our country, and reminds us to keep them in our personal prayers, as well as our prayers at Mass. Send us a photograph (if available), and information including their name, rank, arm of military and assignment - whether overseas or at home. This will be an on-going display, so please continue to send in the names and pictures. Our thanks to the Respect Life Committee for designing the display.

ASSISTANCE FOR VETERANS AND FAMILY MEMBERS
As a faith community, Christ the King Church has a great concern for its families. There are countless issues that can affect our veterans, including depression, anxiety, acute stress, post traumatic stress, and even suicide. Families may notice that their loved one seems distant, "jumpy" at loud noises, reclusive, anxious, or just "not themselves." This is all part of the very long, and sometimes painful, readjustment process that all veterans must cope with upon their return home. Families may expect to see laughter, joy, and a quick return to their regular job or family duties. Instead the reverse may happen. When this occurs, spouses, children, or parents feel that they are at fault, often blame themselves, or find this behavior difficult to understand. Families are more stressed, substance abuse can begin, or become worse, marital difficulties become more pronounced and the once joyous event of a homecoming can become a painful daily encounter. Help is available through a number of county, state, federal and private resources, which can be overwhelming to navigate.
As part of my job, I provide information, assessment, and referral services for the employees and families at the University at Buffalo. I would like to assist any family member or returning vet in our parish who may be struggling with some of these issues. I have a large resource base of providers in the community that can help return you or your loved one to a more productive life. Please give me a call and leave a message if you think I can help: Debbie Hard, 839-1357.

WINTER IS A DIFFICULT TIME OF YEAR TO GET AROUND IN
Snow and ice, and messy roads make any traveling difficult this time of year. If you have difficulty getting around in good weather, it is common sense to stay home if it is icy or too snowy. You can watch the Mass on television (see below), or call the Rectory to have someone bring you weekly communion during the winter months. You don't want to take a chance on falling and hurting yourself. God understands.
ALSO: In this season of colds and flu, sneezing and coughing … If you are sick, it would be better for you to remain at home, rather than coming to church and spreading your germs. If you have a cold, please do not receive the Precious Blood at Mass or extend the Sign of Peace until you are well.

MASS ON TELEVISION
Every Sunday, there is a Mass televised through the Buffalo Diocese. It can be viewed in our area at 7:30 a.m. on Ch. 29 - Fox TV (WUTV); or on Ch 20 with Time Warner at 4:35 p.m. on Sunday and at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. There is a daily Mass televised from St. Joseph Cathedral at 12:05 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. on Ch. 20 with Time Warner. Also, the daily Mass is available over the radio on WLOF-FM (101.7) Monday - Friday at 7:30 p.m.

HELP THE BUFFALO FOOD BANK
- and it doesn't cost you a thing! This year, Campbell's® Chunky™ soup and the NFL will be donating 1,000 cans of soup to each of the 32 football teams. There is a contest in place that can increase the amount of soup our team will receive. As of now, Buffalo is tied for first place with Green Bay in voting. You can help by daily going to http://www.chunky.com and voting for the Buffalo Bills! If the Bills win the voting, and go all the way to the Super Bowl our Buffalo Food Bank will get 18,000 cans of Chunky Soup!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS
The Social Justice Committee wants to thank the wonderful parishioners of Christ the King who once again opened their hearts for the Erie County Home! We also want to thank those of you who joined us in distributing the gifts on Sunday, December 14, including Santa "Randy" Claus. There will be a poster with pictures displaying the joy in the faces of the patients, who so look forward to this day. You can be
sure your gifts were most appreciated.
God Bless you all.
The Social Justice Committee

TOO MANY CALENDARS?
This is the time of year when many of us end up with various calendars for the New Year, that we know we will never use or need. Did you know that many of the patrons of the St. Vincent de Paul Dining room never own a calendar? They would appreciate any extra calendars you may receive over the next few weeks. Please drop them off at the Rectory.

The Amherst Lions Club has placed a collection box in the back of the Church for old glasses, cell phones and hearing aids. Please remember to use these boxes instead of throwing these items away.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA)
REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT (RHAPP)
The FOCA and RHAPP are two extreme legislative proposals, which would wipeout virtually every Pro-Life legislation passed in the last 36 years. FOCA is a Federal legislation, and RHAPP is a New York State legislation. Both are dangerous and, if passed as written, would allow the following:

1. Invalidate the ban on partial-birth abortion and all late-term abortions.
2. Force Catholic hospitals and Catholic physicians, nurses and staff to provide abortions, as they would be made a "fundamental right".
3. Eliminate or prohibit any parental notification for girls as young as 12 who seek an abortion.
4. Allow abortions to be performed by non-physicians and eliminate informed consent, waiting periods and any regulations in place to protect women from unsafe abortion clinics.

Please contact Gov. Paterson to oppose RHAPP at (518) 474-8390;
Please contact your two Senators (Schumer & Clinton) to oppose FOCA (S.1173) at (202)224-3121; and Congressman Chris Lee to oppose FOCA (H.R.1964) at (202)224-3121.
For more info on FOCA, please see http://www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/FOCA
