A VOCATION VIEW

Matrimony – a beautiful vocation so misused today.  Celibacy – a beautiful gift so misunderstood today.  Whether we do God’s work in pairs or as a single person in ministry or in a community, we do God’s work because He calls us.  If you feel God is calling you to priesthood, call Fr. Leon Biernat: 847-5535.

2.        Psychological or emotional battering: verbal abuse, isolation, limitation of free movement, sleep & nutrition deprivation, extreme jealousy, threat of abuse, killing or threatening to kill a pet.

A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE ON POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY

     “As Catholics and responsible citizens, we are deeply involved in works which foster the dignity of each human life.  The principle which guides our efforts is that human life is sacred and worthy of our care.  This is why we feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, care for the aged and seek to protect unborn children.

     “We urge you to reject a ‘pro-choice’ position on abortion.  For the heart of the abortion issue lies the question: ‘What is the moral value of each human life?’  And from the heart of the American, the Republican and Democratic traditions, we would suggest comes the unequivocal answer – all human lives have equal dignity and value.   No court, no legislature, no political party can validly assign lesser value to the lives of some.

     “A pro-choice position, in effect, means acceptance of legal abortion throughout pregnancy and historically has led to abortion on demand, even when unborn children are viable, even when brutal methods unworthy or a civilized society are use.” Taken from a letter by Catholic

Bishops of NY State to Political Parties.

Leon Biernat: 847-5535.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Are you Abused?  Does the person you love… [ ] “Track” all of your time?  [ ] Constantly accuse you of being unfaithful?  [ ] Discourage your relationships with family and friends?  [ ] Prevent you from working or attending group meetings or school?  [ ] Criticize you for little things?  [ ] Anger easily when drinking alcohol or taking drugs?  [ ] Control all the finances and force you to account in detail for what you spend?  [ ] Humiliate you in front of others?  [ ] Destroy personal property or sentimental items?  [ ] Hit, punch , slap, kick, or bite you or the children?   [ ]  Use, or threaten to use, a weapon against you?  [ ] Threaten to hurt you or the children?  [ ] Force you to engage in sex against your will?  If you answer “yes” to even a few of these questions, it’s time to get help!

There are no easy answers, but there are things you can do to protect yourself:

Ø     Call the police.  Assault, even by a family member is a crime.

Ø     Leave, or have someone come and stay with you.  Go to a battered-woman’s shelter – you can call a crisis hotline in your community or a health center to locate a shelter.

Ø     Get medical attention from your doctor or a hospital emergency room.  Ask the staff to photograph the injuries and keep detailed records in case you decide to take legal action.

Ø     Contact your family court for information about civil protection order that doesn’t involve criminal charges or penalties.

Ø     Talk to someone.  Part of the abuser’s power comes from secrecy.  Go to a friend or neighbor, or call a domestic-violence hotline to talk to a counselor.

Ø     Plan ahead and know what you will do if you are attacked again.  If you decide to leave, choose a place to go, and set aside some money.  Put important papers in a place where you can get them quickly.

Ø     Learn to think independently.   Try to plan for the future and set goals for yourself.

A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE ON POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY

As Election Day draws near, we might ponder the words of Pope John Paul II, “We are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the ‘culture of death’ and the ‘culture of life’.   We are all involved and we all share in it, with the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life.”

Examining today’s moral climate, one may find little cause for hope.  However, we can help shape public policy on issues affecting human life by exercising our responsibility to vote and by contacting our elected officials on critical issues.  Together, say the Holy Father, “we sense our duty to preach the Gospel of Life, to celebrate it in the Liturgy and in our whole existence, and to serve it through programs and structures which support and promote life.”  As Christians, we are a people of life.  Now more than ever we are called to act accordingly.

Grant us the Spirit of Wonder and Awe that we may be filled with a loving reverence toward You;

         Grant us the Spirit of Reverence that we may find peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others;

         Grant us the Spirit of Courage that we may bear our cross with You, and with courage overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation;

         Grant us the Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know ourselves and grow in holiness;

         Grant us the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of Your truth;

         Grant us the Spirit of Right Judgement that we may choose the surest way of doing your will, seeking first the Kingdom;

Work off the angry energy through a walk, a project, or a sport. Call a domestic-violence hotline or a health center & ask about counseling & support groups for people who batter. ****Haven House Hotline Phone Number is 884-6000****

A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE ON POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY The Catholic community is large and diverse. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. We are members of every race, come from every ethnic background, and live in urban, rural, and suburban communities. We are CEO's and migrant farm workers, senators and persons on public assistance, business owners and union members. But we are all called to a common commitment to protect human life and stand with those who are poor and vulnerable. We cannot be indifferent to or cynical about the obligations of citizenship. As voters and advocates, candidates and contributors, we are called to provide a moral leaven for our democracy.

A VOCATION VIEW The blind beggar Bartimaeus would not listen to the many people scolding him to be quiet, but shouted all the louder in prayer, "Son of David, have pity on me!" Only then did Jesus call him over and answered his need. Bartimaeus becomes a powerful example of how persistent we must be in prayer when we are asking God to show us His Will for our lives. And then, ask Him for the grace to accept it. If you feel God is offering you the grace of priesthood, call Father Leon Biernat at 847-5535.
